European Copper Institute

The European Copper Institute - the driving force behind the Leonardo ENERGY initiative - is a joint venture between the world's mining companies, represented by the International Copper Association, and the European copper industry. Its mission is to promote copper's benefits to modern society across Europe, through its Brussels office and a network of eleven Copper Development Associations.

In fulfilling its mission, ECI manages a broad range of information and education activities. Dissemination to target audiences is carried out through the national Copper Development Associations located in the Benelux, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Russia, Scandinavia, Spain and the UK.

Since the end of the 1990s the European Copper Institute [ECI] has been concerned about the impact experienced by commerce and industry of the changing nature of the energy demands organisations face as a result of equipment technological advances, the increasing need o build in resilience into their electrical power installations and the presumed mounting costs of not taking either adequate preventative or reactive action to accommodate the changes.

Global energy savings potential from high efficiency distribution transformers

The worldwide electricity savings potential of switching to high efficiency transformers is estimated to be 200 TWh. This savings potential is not only technically advantageous, but also brings economic and environmental benefits. Taking the full life cycle cost into account, selecting high efficiency transformers is often an economically sound investment decision despite their higher purchase price.
